EARLY AGES
To understand how and where it all started, let's take a look back at my childhood.
My name is Elcenir de Carvalho /ˈeltʃɪni ðə kɑːvəloʊ/, though many people know me as Ceni /tʃɪni/. I was born on June 8, 1970, in Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil, and raised in Cobilândia, Vila Velha. I come from a low-income family. As a very young child, I was often punished and forced to help my second stepfather, a radio and television technician, in his workshop.
At the age of nine, tired of being spanked by my mother and stepfather with open-handed swats, belts, and wire—and being grounded almost every day, sometimes forced to kneel on corn kernels scattered across the floor for hours—I longed for a meaningful change in my life.
I had also been badly mistreated by at least two of my brothers. One burned my leg with melted plastic when I was only seven, and on another occasion, threw a pot of boiling beans onto my abdomen, causing severe burns from my neck to below my navel.
Seeking a way out of that environment, I began collecting egg cardboard boxes and copper wire from the trash in the streets of that small town to sell at a junkyard, earning a little money in the process. With that, I eventually enrolled in a private English course in Vitória, the capital city of Espírito Santo, not far from my hometown. I was only twelve.

FIRST JOB
It was a dream come true. At the age of seventeen, after completing my five-year American English course, I became an American English teacher. Soon afterward, I was accepted and licensed by SEDU (the State Department of Education of Espírito Santo, Brazil), which allowed me to teach in both public and private schools. However, my true dream was to build my own English school—a dream I fulfilled, and one that has allowed me to teach ever since.

THE KICKOFF
I became one of Banco Real's regional managers in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. During that time, I got married and continued pursuing my personal and professional goals. Although my career in banking was rewarding, my passion for teaching and technology never faded, and I remained committed to the dreams I had been building since my youth.

LIVING ABROAD
I moved to the United States with my wife and son, where we initially settled in Suwanee, Georgia. We later lived in Newark, New Jersey, before settling in Brockton, Massachusetts, where we remained for more than a decade.
While living in Brockton, my wife and I founded our first computer business. We provided technical support and computer services to a wide range of clients, including residential customers, physicians, the Royal Thai Consulate in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and numerous other professionals throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine. At the same time, I continued operating my English school.
In addition to managing our own businesses, I also held full-time administrative positions with several large companies. Later, I expanded my international experience by living in the Dominican Republic, where I partnered with a longtime Dominican-American friend to establish and manage a call center.

GIVING BACK AND BELIEFS
I believe that everyone has the ability to give back in one way or another.
Every year, I award full English course scholarships to students from low-income families, helping them gain access to opportunities they might not otherwise have.
To make a long story short, despite the painful experiences of my childhood and the disappointments I faced within my own family, I chose not to let those circumstances define who I would become. Instead, I dedicated myself to building a life based on hard work, integrity, compassion, and perseverance. Everything I have achieved has come through determination, continuous learning, and countless hours of personal effort—supported not by family resources, but by my faith in God and my belief that a person's past does not determine their future.
I've never had it all, but I've always had enough. I wasn't born rich, and I never had much. Few friends, little family support. But I had heart. I had faith. I had hope and dreams.
And I'm still here.
